About the Tests

Three Ways to Measure Blood Glucose

Blood sugar testing isn't one-size-fits-all. Fasting blood sugar establishes your baseline. Random blood sugar screens at any time. Postprandial glucose catches post-meal spikes that fasting tests miss. We select the right test for your clinical situation.

🌅
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
Measured after 8–10 hours without food. The gold standard for diabetes diagnosis. Normal: 70–99 mg/dL. Pre-diabetes: 100–125 mg/dL. Diabetes: ≥126 mg/dL on two separate occasions.
⏱️
Random Blood Sugar (RBS)
Taken at any time regardless of meals. Excellent for acute screening. RBS ≥200 mg/dL with symptoms (thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision) is diagnostic for diabetes without the need for a fasting test.
🍽️
2-Hour Postprandial Glucose (PPBS)
Measured exactly 2 hours after a meal. Detects impaired glucose tolerance — the precursor to diabetes. Normal: <140 mg/dL. Impaired: 140–199 mg/dL. Diabetic: ≥200 mg/dL.
When to Test

Five Signs You Need Blood Sugar Testing

01
Excessive Thirst & Frequent Urination
Classic early diabetes symptoms — high blood glucose causes the kidneys to pass more urine, leading to dehydration and constant thirst. Don't ignore this pairing.
02
Unexplained Fatigue or Blurry Vision
Glucose can't enter cells without insulin. Cells starve, causing exhaustion. High glucose also causes the lens to swell, blurring vision — both reversible with proper treatment.
03
Family History or Obesity
Type 2 diabetes is strongly hereditary. Overweight individuals — especially with abdominal fat — are at high risk. Screening every 1–2 years is recommended, even without symptoms.
04
Pregnancy (Gestational Diabetes Screen)
Gestational diabetes affects up to 10% of pregnancies and increases risks for mother and baby. A glucose challenge test or fasting glucose screen at 24–28 weeks is standard care.
05
Monitoring Existing Diabetes
If you're on metformin, insulin, or other diabetes medication, regular fasting and postprandial glucose tests track how well your treatment is working and when adjustment is needed.

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Blood Sugar Test

Simple steps that make your result clinically meaningful.

🌙
Fast 8–10 Hours (FBS Only)
For fasting blood sugar, eat nothing and drink only plain water for 8–10 hours before the test. Come in first thing in the morning — this gives the most accurate fasting baseline.
💊
Disclose Medications & Steroids
Steroids (prednisone), diuretics, antipsychotics, and some blood pressure medications can raise blood glucose. Always inform us of everything you are taking before the test.

"My father is diabetic so I was worried. Mascot Healthcare did my fasting blood sugar — it came back pre-diabetic. They explained what lifestyle changes could prevent progression. Tested again 6 months later — back to normal."
