What the Blood Test Actually Detects

Herpes simplex virus is extremely common and often asymptomatic. A type-specific IgG blood test reveals whether your immune system has encountered HSV — regardless of visible symptoms.

1️⃣

HSV-1 (Oral / Genital)

Classically causes cold sores around the mouth but increasingly causes genital herpes through oral-genital contact. IgG antibody confirms past infection and latent carriage. Around 60–70% of Nigerian adults carry HSV-1.

  • Lifelong latent infection in sensory ganglia
  • Oral lesions (cold sores) most common
  • Can cause genital herpes
  • Most people have no or mild symptoms
2️⃣

HSV-2 (Genital Herpes)

The primary cause of recurrent genital herpes. Transmitted by skin-to-skin contact; condoms reduce but do not eliminate risk. Most people are unaware they carry HSV-2 because outbreaks are mild or mistaken for other skin conditions.

  • Transmitted sexually (skin-to-skin)
  • Recurrent genital blisters or ulcers
  • 70% of carriers have no classic symptoms
  • Increases HIV acquisition risk 2–3×

When to Get Tested

Unexplained genital sores or ulcers Blisters, ulcers, or recurring skin irritation in the genital area should be investigated — herpes is often the cause, even without classic symptoms.
💑
New or multiple sexual partners Routine STI screening — including HSV — is recommended when starting a new relationship or after unprotected sex with an unknown partner.
🤰
Pregnancy — neonatal herpes prevention Active HSV-2 at delivery can transmit to the newborn with severe consequences. Knowing your status allows your doctor to plan prophylaxis or caesarean delivery.
🔴
HIV-positive individuals HSV-2 co-infection is very common in HIV-positive people; both viruses promote each other. Annual herpes screening is part of HIV care.
🧘
Peace of mind, routine sexual health check Many people test simply to know their baseline status. A negative result is reassuring; a positive result enables informed decisions and treatment.
Window Period & Timing
Week 1–3 post-exposure IgG antibodies have not yet developed. Testing too early gives a false negative.
Week 4–11 (equivocal zone) Antibodies beginning to rise. An equivocal index (0.9–1.1) should be repeated at 12–16 weeks.
Week 12–16 (reliable window) IgG fully detectable in most people. A negative result at this point is highly reliable.

Nothing to Fear, Just Bring Yourself

1

No Preparation Needed

No fasting, no dietary restriction, no special timing required. The herpes IgG blood test can be done at any time of day. Walk in or book on WhatsApp — a small venous blood sample is all that is needed.

2

Timing After Exposure

If testing after a known or suspected exposure, wait at least 12 weeks for a reliable result. If you tested earlier and got a negative, repeat at 12–16 weeks to confirm. Tell us when the exposure occurred so we can advise you on timing.

3

Confidentiality Assured

Your result is for your eyes only. We do not share herpes results with employers, insurers, or family members without your written consent. You may also collect results digitally — no paperwork that could be seen by others.

Tested, Counselled, Supported

🔬
Type-specific IgG, not just "herpes positive"

Many older tests report only combined HSV antibodies, leaving you unsure which type you carry. We run type-specific HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG separately, with index values.

💬
Post-result counselling

A positive herpes result changes nothing about who you are — but it does change how you manage your health. Our staff explain what the result means practically, not just clinically.

🔒
Absolute privacy

Your booking, sample, and result are handled in a private consultation environment. We never discuss results at the reception counter.
