When Do You Need a Knee Scan?
Knee Pain or Swelling
Persistent discomfort, especially after walking, running, or climbing stairs, warrants an ultrasound check.
Injury or Trauma
Recent falls or sports injuries may cause ligament or tendon damage best assessed via ultrasound.
Suspected Arthritis
Joint stiffness, limited movement, or pain in older adults may indicate degenerative changes in the knee joint.
Preparing for Your Knee Ultrasound
Before the Scan
No special preparation is needed. Just wear loose clothing that allows access to the knee area.
During the Scan
You will lie comfortably while our trained sonographer scans the knee using a gel and handheld probe. The process is painless and takes about 15–20 minutes.

Ultrasound is quick, painless and uses no radiation. It's very good at looking at the structures near the surface of the knee:
- the patellar and quadriceps tendons (tears, swelling, tendinitis)
- the ligaments on the inner and outer sides of the knee
- fluid in or around the joint, bursitis, and a Baker's cyst behind the knee
- lumps and swellings under the skin
It can't see well deep inside the joint. Problems with the cruciate ligaments (ACL, PCL), the menisci and the joint cartilage usually need an MRI, which our doctor will refer you for if it's needed.
After a fall or injury, if the knee looks out of shape, you can't put weight on it, or it's suddenly very swollen, go to a hospital. We don't handle emergencies.
After your scan
You get your scan report on the day. If you'd like a doctor to explain it and plan treatment, such as rest, physiotherapy, medicines or a referral, book a consultation. Scans are by appointment, Monday to Saturday.
