When is a scrotal ultrasound recommended?

Testicular pain / discomfort

Evaluate for epididymitis, torsion, or trauma.

Lump or mass

Differentiate between cysts, benign lesions, or solid tumors.

Scrotal swelling / hydrocele

Check for fluid collection, varicocele, or hernia.

Infertility evaluation

Assess varicocele, absent vas deferens, or testicular volume.

Locate testis in pediatric or adult patients.

Preparing for your scrotal scan

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting trousers.
  • No special fasting or preparation needed.
  • You may be asked to lift your shirt and lower your trousers; a drape is provided.
  • The sonographer applies warm gel and glides a probe gently over the scrotum.
  • Total time: 20–30 minutes.

Not at all. It's non-invasive. You'll feel a warm gel and light pressure from the probe – no pain.

A referral from a doctor is helpful but not mandatory. You can walk in and our clinician can assess and request the scan if needed.

No special preparation. Wear comfortable clothes. You may be asked to lower your trousers to the knees; a drape will cover you.

Ultrasound can differentiate between solid masses (suspicious) and fluid-filled cysts. If a solid mass is seen, further tests (tumor markers, biopsy) are recommended.
