What is VIA Screening?

Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is a simple, effective method for early detection of cervical abnormalities.

During the procedure, a healthcare provider applies dilute acetic acid (vinegar) to the cervix and inspects it under bright light. Healthy tissue remains unchanged, while abnormal precancerous cells temporarily turn white (acetowhite), making them easily visible.

Who Should Get Screened?

Cervical cancer screening is recommended for all women at risk

Age 25-49

All women in this age range should be screened every 3-5 years, regardless of symptoms.

Sexually Active Women

Any woman who has ever been sexually active should begin screening by age 25.

HIV Positive Women

Women living with HIV have higher risk and should be screened more frequently.

Never Screened

If you've never had cervical cancer screening, schedule an appointment today.

Previous Abnormal Results

Women with past abnormal screenings need regular follow-up as recommended.

Post-Menopausal

Women over 50 remain at risk and should continue regular screening.

Note: Screening is recommended even if you've received the HPV vaccine.

What to Expect During Your VIA Screening

A simple, quick procedure for your peace of mind

1

Preparation

You'll be asked to empty your bladder. For 24-48 hours before, avoid intercourse, douching, or using vaginal medications.

2

Positioning

You'll lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups (similar to a routine pelvic exam).

3

Speculum Insertion

A lubricated speculum is gently inserted to visualize the cervix. You may feel mild pressure but it shouldn't be painful.

4

Acetic Acid Application

Dilute acetic acid (vinegar) is applied to the cervix using a cotton swab. You may feel a mild tingling sensation.

5

Visual Inspection

After 1 minute, the provider examines the cervix under bright light to check for any acetowhite areas indicating abnormal cells.

6

Results & Next Steps

Results are given immediately. If normal, you'll be advised on when to return. If abnormal, we'll discuss treatment options.

Important Timing

Best time for screening:

Avoid menstruation - mid-cycle (2 weeks after your period) is ideal.

How long does it take?

The entire procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. You can return to normal activities immediately.

After the procedure:

You may have very mild spotting, which is normal. Avoid intercourse for 24-48 hours if you experienced any bleeding.

See & Treat Approach: If precancerous lesions are found and are eligible for treatment, we can often treat them during the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about VIA screening

Most women experience minimal to no pain. You may feel mild pressure from the speculum and a slight tingling sensation when the acetic acid is applied. The procedure is generally well-tolerated without anesthesia.

For most women, screening every 3-5 years is recommended if results are normal. Women with HIV, those who are immunocompromised, or those with previous abnormal results may need more frequent screening.

A positive result means precancerous changes were seen. This does NOT mean you have cancer. Depending on the extent, we may recommend treatment (often cryotherapy or thermal ablation during the same visit) or further evaluation. Most precancerous lesions are completely treatable.

It's best to schedule your screening when you're not menstruating. Blood can obscure the view of the cervix. Mid-cycle (about 2 weeks after your period) is ideal.

Most medications don't interfere with VIA. However, avoid using vaginal creams, suppositories, or douches for 48 hours before your appointment. Inform our provider of any medications you're taking.

Yes, when performed by trained providers, VIA has good sensitivity (70-80%) for detecting precancerous lesions. It's recommended by WHO as an effective screening method, especially in low-resource settings. The "see and treat" approach also reduces loss to follow-up.

Yes, VIA screening is safe during pregnancy. However, it's often recommended to wait until 6-8 weeks after delivery unless you have symptoms or haven't been screened in a long time. Discuss with our provider.
