Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is a simple, effective method for early detection of cervical abnormalities.
During the procedure, a healthcare provider applies dilute acetic acid (vinegar) to the cervix and inspects it under bright light. Healthy tissue remains unchanged, while abnormal precancerous cells temporarily turn white (acetowhite), making them easily visible.
Takes only 5-10 minutes, results immediately available
Minimal discomfort, no anesthesia required
Cost-effective screening accessible to all women
No waiting for lab results - see and treat approach
| Screening Method | Time to Results | Cost | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIA | Immediate | $ | High |
| Pap Smear | 1-2 weeks | $$ | Moderate |
| HPV DNA Test | 1-2 weeks | $$$ | Limited |
VIA is recommended by WHO as an effective, low-cost screening option, especially in resource-limited settings.
The WHO-recommended approach for cervical cancer prevention
Immediate results allow for same-day treatment in many cases, reducing loss to follow-up.
No tissue removal, no significant discomfort, and no special preparation needed.
Affordable screening makes regular cervical cancer prevention accessible to all women.
Takes only 5-10 minutes - you can return to your normal activities immediately.
When performed by trained providers, VIA has good sensitivity for detecting precancerous lesions.
Know your cervical health status and take control of your reproductive health.
Cervical cancer screening is recommended for all women at risk
All women in this age range should be screened every 3-5 years, regardless of symptoms.
Any woman who has ever been sexually active should begin screening by age 25.
Women living with HIV have higher risk and should be screened more frequently.
If you've never had cervical cancer screening, schedule an appointment today.
Women with past abnormal screenings need regular follow-up as recommended.
Women over 50 remain at risk and should continue regular screening.
A simple, quick procedure for your peace of mind
You'll be asked to empty your bladder. For 24-48 hours before, avoid intercourse, douching, or using vaginal medications.
You'll lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups (similar to a routine pelvic exam).
A lubricated speculum is gently inserted to visualize the cervix. You may feel mild pressure but it shouldn't be painful.
Dilute acetic acid (vinegar) is applied to the cervix using a cotton swab. You may feel a mild tingling sensation.
After 1 minute, the provider examines the cervix under bright light to check for any acetowhite areas indicating abnormal cells.
Results are given immediately. If normal, you'll be advised on when to return. If abnormal, we'll discuss treatment options.
Avoid menstruation - mid-cycle (2 weeks after your period) is ideal.
The entire procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. You can return to normal activities immediately.
You may have very mild spotting, which is normal. Avoid intercourse for 24-48 hours if you experienced any bleeding.
