What We Test

Three Markers. The Complete Picture.

Nigeria has one of the highest hepatitis B infection rates in the world — an estimated 11% of the population are chronic carriers. The complete panel distinguishes between active infection, natural immunity, vaccine-induced immunity, and susceptibility — each requiring a different response.

HBsAg — Hepatitis B Surface Antigen

The primary marker of infection. Positive = currently infected (acute or chronic carrier). Highly contagious. If positive for more than 6 months, confirms chronic HBV — requiring monitoring and possible antiviral therapy.

Anti-HBs — Surface Antibody

Positive = immune. Can result from successful vaccination (>10 mIU/mL protective) or natural recovery from infection. Negative Anti-HBs in a previously vaccinated person may mean the vaccine series needs a booster.

Anti-HBc — Core Antibody (Total / IgM)

Indicates past or current infection. IgM Anti-HBc = acute recent infection. IgG Anti-HBc = past or chronic infection. Presence with negative HBsAg and Anti-HBs suggests "window period" or occult HBV.

Five Reasons for the Complete HBV Panel

Pre-Marital or Pre-Pregnancy Screening

Hepatitis B can be transmitted sexually and from mother to child at birth. Knowing your status before marriage or pregnancy enables vaccination (if susceptible) and preventive measures for the newborn (HBIG + vaccine within 12 hours of birth).

Healthcare Workers

Medical staff are at high occupational risk from needlestick injuries. Pre-employment HBV panel confirms immunity status. Staff with Anti-HBs <10 mIU/mL need revaccination before patient contact.

Before Immunosuppressive Therapy

Chemotherapy, biologics, steroids, and rituximab can reactivate latent HBV in carriers — causing fulminant hepatitis. Screening and prophylactic antivirals before treatment are standard of care.

Household Contacts of HBV Carriers

HBV spreads within households through shared razors, toothbrushes, and close contact. Anyone living with an HBsAg-positive person should be tested — and vaccinated if susceptible.

Checking Immunity After Vaccination

Not everyone develops adequate immunity after the standard 3-dose series. Anti-HBs testing 4–8 weeks after completing vaccination confirms a protective titre — or identifies non-responders who need additional doses.

How to Prepare for Your HBV Panel

The Hepatitis B panel is one of the simplest blood tests to prepare for.

No Fasting Required

You can eat and drink normally before your Hepatitis B panel. Food intake has no effect on HBsAg, Anti-HBs, or Anti-HBc antibody levels. Come at any convenient time during clinic hours.

Note Recent Vaccination

If you received a Hepatitis B vaccine dose within the past 2–4 weeks, HBsAg may temporarily appear positive (due to vaccine antigen). Inform us of your vaccination date so we can interpret results correctly.

Bring Previous Results if Available

If you've had prior HBV testing or completed a vaccine series, bring those results. Prior Anti-HBs titres help us determine whether immunity is waning or whether a booster dose is needed.
