ABO & Rh Blood Typing · Haemoglobin Electrophoresis · Sickle Cell Screening · Marriage & Pre-Natal

Two tests every Nigerian should know. Your blood group determines transfusion safety and pregnancy compatibility. Your genotype determines whether you or your children are at risk for sickle cell disease — information that can guide the most important decisions of your life.

About the Tests

Two Essential Blood Tests

Blood group and genotype are the two most fundamental tests in Nigerian healthcare — essential for safe surgery, pre-natal care, marriage planning, and employment medicals. Despite their importance, many Nigerians do not know their genotype until a crisis occurs. Testing takes minutes. The information lasts a lifetime.

🩸
Blood Group (ABO + Rh Factor)
Determines your ABO type (A, B, AB, or O) and Rhesus status (positive or negative). Blood group O is the universal donor; AB is the universal recipient. Rh-negative women carrying Rh-positive babies require anti-D prophylaxis — making Rh testing essential in pregnancy. Same-day result by slide or tube agglutination method.
🧬
Genotype (Haemoglobin Electrophoresis)
Identifies your haemoglobin type: AA (normal), AS (sickle cell trait), SS (sickle cell disease), AC, or SC. Haemoglobin electrophoresis is the gold standard — far more accurate than the rapid sickling test. Results in 24–48 hours. Critical for couples planning marriage or pregnancy: AS × AS carries a 25% SS risk per pregnancy.
⚠️
Why Genotype Matters Before Marriage
Sickle cell disease (SS) is a serious, chronic, painful condition. Two AS carriers (sickle trait) have a 1-in-4 chance of producing an SS child per pregnancy. Knowing your genotype before marriage or conception is the only way to make an informed decision — not after. Electrophoresis (not a rapid test) is the accurate method.
When to Test

Five Reasons to Know Your Blood Group & Genotype

01
Pre-Marital Screening — Know Before You Commit
Genotype testing before marriage is standard practice in Nigeria for a reason. Two AS individuals who marry have a 25% chance per pregnancy of producing an SS child. Early knowledge allows informed decision-making — including genetic counselling, alternative family planning, or pre-implantation testing.
02
Pregnancy — Rh Incompatibility Prevention
An Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby is at risk of haemolytic disease of the newborn in subsequent pregnancies. Anti-D injection (given at delivery and in complications) prevents this — but only if Rh status is known. Every pregnant woman should know her blood group and Rh factor at the first antenatal visit.
03
Pre-Surgery & Emergency Transfusion
Any elective surgery requires blood grouping before the operating theatre. Emergency transfusion without blood group knowledge risks a potentially fatal haemolytic transfusion reaction. Knowing your blood group is basic preparedness — keep a copy of your blood group card at all times.
04
NYSC & Pre-Employment Medical
The NYSC medical clearance and most Nigerian employer pre-employment medicals require blood group and genotype results. We issue certified results with clinic letterhead — acceptable for NYSC registration and corporate onboarding.
05
Children of AS Parents — Early Sickle Cell Screening
Children born to two AS parents should be genotyped early. Sickle cell disease (SS) in childhood is manageable with early diagnosis — prophylactic penicillin, hydroxyurea, and vaccination prevent the most dangerous complications. Early diagnosis changes outcomes dramatically.

⚕️ Rapid sickling tests are not reliable for genotype — they cannot distinguish AS from SS accurately. Haemoglobin electrophoresis is the only method we use. Don't trust a rapid test result for marriage decisions.

Preparation

How to Prepare for Blood Group & Genotype

One of the simplest blood tests available — minimal preparation required.

🍽️
No Fasting Required
Blood group and genotype testing require no dietary restriction. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. This makes it easy to combine with other fasting tests (glucose, lipids) in a single visit — arrange fasting tests first, then eat, then continue with blood group and genotype if coming back.
💊
Mention Recent Transfusion
A blood transfusion in the past 3 months can temporarily alter blood group serology results. If you have received a transfusion recently, inform us before testing — so we can interpret any unexpected results correctly and advise on the appropriate timing for a definitive blood group confirmation.
Why Choose Us

Trusted Blood Testing in Akoka & Beyond

🧬
Electrophoresis Only — Not Rapid Tests
We use haemoglobin electrophoresis for genotyping — the gold standard method that reliably distinguishes AA, AS, SS, AC, and SC. Rapid sickling tests cannot do this accurately. For a decision as important as marriage, only electrophoresis is acceptable.
Same-Day Blood Group, 24–48h Genotype
Blood group results are available the same day by slide agglutination method. Genotype electrophoresis takes 24–48 hours. Both can be ordered together in a single visit — one blood draw, comprehensive results.
📋
Certified Results for NYSC & Employment
Our blood group and genotype reports are issued on clinic letterhead with the medical officer's signature and stamp — accepted for NYSC registration, corporate employment medicals, and hospital admissions across Lagos.
💬
Genetic Counselling Guidance
When a couple's genotype combination carries risk (AS × AS, for example), our staff explain the implications clearly and guide them to appropriate genetic counselling resources — so results lead to informed action, not confusion or panic.
"My partner and I came for pre-marital testing. I was AA and he came back AS. The staff explained exactly what that means — zero risk for us. But they also explained what AS × AS would mean and why electrophoresis matters more than a rapid test. We left completely informed. That counselling was worth more than the test itself."
