Genotype test (AA, AS, SS)
A one-off blood test that tells you your haemoglobin genotype, so you know your chances of having a child with sickle cell disease. Walk in, no fasting.
What your result means
| Genotype | What it means |
|---|---|
| AA | Usual haemoglobin. You don't carry the sickle cell gene. |
| AS | Sickle cell trait: you're healthy, but you carry the gene and can pass it to your children. |
| SS | Sickle cell disease. |
| AC | You carry the haemoglobin C gene. Usually healthy. |
| SC | A form of sickle cell disease. |
Your chances as a couple
These chances apply to every pregnancy separately. If you're both carriers, talk it through with a doctor before you plan a family.
| Parents | Chance for each pregnancy |
|---|---|
| AA + AA | All children AA |
| AA + AS | 1 in 2 AA, 1 in 2 AS |
| AS + AS | 1 in 4 AA, 1 in 2 AS, 1 in 4 SS |
| AS + SS | 1 in 2 AS, 1 in 2 SS |
| AA + SS | All children AS |
When to test
- Before marriage or a serious relationship: see our premarital screening.
- Before trying for a baby, if you don't know your genotype.
- You only need it once: your genotype doesn't change.
- Had a blood transfusion in the last 3 months? Tell us, because it can affect the result.
Good to know
- No fasting needed. Results are usually ready within 24 hours.
- Pair it with a blood group test if you need both.
