TB blood test (serum)

A quick blood test that screens for tuberculosis (TB) infection. Walk in, no fasting, results the same day.

What the test does

The serum TB test looks for your body's immune response to the TB bacterium in a blood sample. It's a screening test: a quick first check for people who may have been exposed to TB.

Who might want it

  • People who live or work closely with someone who has TB
  • People living with HIV or diabetes, who are at higher risk of TB
  • Anyone who wants a TB screen as part of a health check

What the result can and can't tell you

A TB blood test can't prove or rule out active TB on its own. A positive result means you need more checks. A negative result doesn't rule TB out if you have symptoms.

To diagnose active TB, the standard test is a sputum test, such as GeneXpert. In Nigeria, TB testing and treatment are free at government DOTS centres, and our doctor will refer you.

Have a cough for 2 weeks or more, coughing up blood, fever, night sweats or weight loss? You need a sputum test, not only a blood test. Book a consultation and our doctor will arrange it.

Before your test

  • No fasting needed.
  • Tell us if you're taking TB medicine or have had TB before: it affects how the result is read.
  • Results are usually ready the same day.
