What is a Transvaginal Scan?

A transvaginal ultrasound is an internal examination that provides detailed images of a woman's reproductive organs. Unlike abdominal ultrasounds, this procedure uses a specially designed ultrasound transducer that is inserted into the vagina to get closer to the pelvic organs.

This proximity allows for higher frequency sound waves and clearer, more detailed images of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix.

Key Benefits
  • More detailed images than abdominal ultrasound
  • No radiation exposure
  • Minimal discomfort during the procedure
  • Quick procedure (typically 15-30 minutes)
  • Immediate results and interpretation

What to Expect During Your Scan

1
Preparation

You'll be asked to empty your bladder and change into a hospital gown. Our female staff will ensure your privacy and comfort throughout the procedure.

2
Positioning

You'll lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. A sheet will be provided for modesty.

3
The Scan

A small, sterile transducer (about the size of a tampon) covered with a protective sheath and gel will be gently inserted into the vagina.

4
Image Capture

The sonographer will move the transducer to capture images from different angles. You may feel slight pressure but typically no pain.

5
Results

The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes. Our specialist will review the images with you and provide a comprehensive report.
