What's included

What Your Men's Health Check Covers

Blood pressure & cardiovascular risk

Hypertension affects 1 in 3 Nigerian men. A blood pressure check is the most basic and impactful preventive health action available.

Measured both arms, resting

Blood sugar (fasting glucose + HbA1c)

Nigeria has among the fastest-growing diabetes rates in Africa. A fasting glucose and HbA1c identifies diabetes and pre-diabetes before complications develop.

Fast 8–10 hours before

Lipid profile (cholesterol)

High LDL cholesterol accelerates atherosclerosis — the same process that causes heart attacks, strokes, and erectile dysfunction. Most men over 35 have never had a lipid profile.

Blood draw — fasting

Prostate assessment (PSA + scan)

PSA blood test and prostate ultrasound scan for men over 40. Early detection of BPH or prostate cancer changes outcomes dramatically.

PSA + scan — see current prices

Testosterone + hormonal panel

Testosterone, prolactin, thyroid function. Low testosterone is under-diagnosed in Nigerian men — and is a treatable cause of fatigue, ED, and low mood.

Blood draw — morning, fasted

Kidney and liver function

Creatinine, eGFR, LFTs — baseline organ function that detects early kidney damage from hypertension or diabetes, and liver disease from hepatitis or alcohol.

Blood draw

Full blood count

Baseline haemoglobin, white cells, and platelets. Anaemia, infection, and blood disorders are identified here.

Blood draw

STI screen (where relevant)

HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis — offered to all sexually active men as part of a comprehensive health review.

Confidential
The best time to find a health problem is before you have symptoms. Every component of this check targets a condition that is common, serious, and significantly more treatable when found early. Most men assessed at Mascot Healthcare's men's health check have at least one finding that requires attention.
Age-specific guide

What to Prioritise at Every Age

In your 20s

Establish a baseline. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI. STI screen if sexually active. Testosterone if symptoms suggest deficiency. Hepatitis B vaccination if not immune.

In your 30s

All of the above, plus: fasting lipid profile (atherosclerosis begins in the 30s), testicular self-examination training, baseline PSA if family history of prostate cancer. Erectile dysfunction appearing at this age is almost always a sign of undiagnosed hypertension, diabetes, or low testosterone — all of which need identification.

In your 40s

Annual PSA + prostate scan. HbA1c (diabetes screening). Full lipid profile. Testosterone. Kidney function. Blood pressure with 10-year cardiovascular risk calculation. ECG if indicated. If any component is abnormal, repeat more frequently.

In your 50s and beyond

All of the above, plus: colon cancer screening referral from 50. Eye examination for diabetic retinopathy if diabetic. Bone density check if risk factors for osteoporosis. Annual prostate surveillance.

Why Men Avoid Health Checks — and Why You Shouldn't

The cultural expectation in Nigeria — as in most of the world — is that men are strong, don't complain, and don't need doctors unless something is visibly wrong. This attitude is lethal.

At Mascot Healthcare, we understand that men often need a different kind of healthcare environment — efficient, direct, evidence-based, no unnecessary waiting. Our men's health check is designed around that. You come in, we run the tests, we explain the results honestly, and you leave with a clear picture and a management plan. No fuss.

The conditions we most commonly find at men's health checks at Mascot Healthcare:

  • Undiagnosed hypertension (often at Stage 2 — already damaging kidneys and arteries)
  • Undiagnosed pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • Low testosterone with years of symptoms wrongly attributed to stress
  • Elevated PSA requiring follow-up
  • Abnormal lipid profile in men who have never had a cholesterol test
  • Asymptomatic hepatitis B infection
  • Undiagnosed STI (particularly chlamydia, syphilis) in sexually active men
Questions

Men's health check FAQs

How long does a men's health check take?
A standard men's health check at Mascot Healthcare takes 45–60 minutes. Blood results for most tests are available within 24–48 hours. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and HIV turnaround is listed per test on our price list.
Do I need to fast before the check?
If your check includes blood sugar and/or lipid profile testing — fast for 8–10 hours beforehand (water is fine). Come first thing in the morning for best results. If only non-metabolic tests are included, fasting is not required.
Can I do this check without my wife or partner knowing?
Yes — all consultations and results at Mascot Healthcare are completely confidential. Your results are shared with no one without your explicit consent.
I feel completely fine. Do I need a health check?
Yes — more so because you feel fine. The conditions found most commonly on men's health checks have no symptoms in their early stages: hypertension is asymptomatic until it causes stroke; diabetes causes no pain; prostate cancer is usually symptom-free in its curable stage. Preventive screening works by finding these conditions before the symptoms develop.
