Essential vaccinations for Nigerians travelling internationally
Nigerians travelling internationally face two vaccination challenges: (1) ensuring they are protected against diseases common at their destination, and (2) meeting destination entry requirements. Some vaccines are legally required for entry; others are medically recommended based on risk. Travel health advice should ideally be sought at least 4–6 weeks before travel — some vaccines require multiple doses over weeks, and all need time to stimulate immunity before departure. Before hepatitis B vaccination — if you are a carrier (HBsAg positive), vaccination is not harmful but provides no benefit. If immune (anti-HBs positive), vaccination not needed

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any vaccines to visit the UK, USA, or Europe?
No specific vaccines are required for entry to most high-income countries. However, you must carry your valid yellow fever card (ICVP) as you are departing from Nigeria. It is medically recommended to be up to date on COVID-19, influenza, and routine vaccines (tetanus, hepatitis B). Some travellers visiting family for extended periods may benefit from influenza vaccine.
What vaccines are needed for Hajj?
The Nigerian National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) specifies required vaccines annually. Fixed requirements include: meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (mandatory, Saudi government requirement), yellow fever (for all Nigerian travellers), influenza (strongly recommended — close contact in large crowds). Hepatitis A and B are also recommended. Allow 6–8 weeks before Hajj for completion of required vaccines.
Can I get all my travel vaccines at once?
Most vaccines can be given simultaneously at different injection sites. However, two live vaccines (yellow fever and oral typhoid, or yellow fever and MMR) should either be given on the same day or separated by 28 days (the immune response to one live vaccine can temporarily interfere with the other). Inactivated vaccines can be given with any other vaccine at any interval.
I'm immunosuppressed (on chemotherapy / HIV) — can I receive travel vaccines?
Inactivated vaccines (hepatitis A, hepatitis B, injectable typhoid, meningococcal, influenza) are generally safe for immunosuppressed individuals. Live vaccines (yellow fever, oral typhoid, MMR) carry risk of disseminated vaccine strain infection in severely immunosuppressed individuals and are generally avoided when CD4 < 200 (HIV) or on active chemotherapy.
