Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito β the same mosquito that spreads yellow fever and Zika virus. Once thought uncommon in Nigeria, dengue is increasingly recognised β surveillance studies have found seroprevalence rates of 20β60% in some Nigerian cities, indicating widespread past exposure with most infections going undiagnosed. There are four dengue serotypes (DENV1β4); infection with one provides lifelong immunity to that serotype but subsequent infection with a different serotype carries higher risk of severe dengue (dengue haemorrhagic fever). There is no specific antiviral treatment β management is supportive β making prevention essential.
