Side by side
Rapid diagnostic test (RDT)
Detects malaria antigen in blood
Strength: Result in 15–20 minutes, no microscope needed
Limitation: Can remain positive for weeks after successful treatment; does not show how heavy the infection is
Microscopy (MP / blood film)
A trained scientist counts parasites under a microscope
Strength: Shows parasite density, identifies species, and turns negative once treated
Limitation: Takes longer and depends on the skill of the microscopist
Which to choose
For a first diagnosis either works. Microscopy is better when severity matters, when the species matters, or when checking whether treatment has worked — because an RDT can stay positive from residual antigen long after the parasites are gone.
