PSA blood test
Measures a protein produced by the prostate
Strength: Simple blood test; detects a signal before symptoms appear
Limitation: Rises with benign enlargement and infection too, so a raised result is not a diagnosis
Prostate ultrasound
Images the gland and measures its size and residual urine
Strength: Shows structure, size and whether the bladder empties properly
Limitation: Cannot detect cancer at a cellular level
Which to choose
They answer different questions and are usually done together. PSA gives a chemical signal; the scan shows physical structure and how well you are emptying. Neither alone establishes a diagnosis of cancer, which requires biopsy.
