What usually causes this
Primary dysmenorrhoea
Period pain with no underlying disease. Common, and manageable.
Fibroids
Cause heavy, painful periods and can enlarge the abdomen.
Adenomyosis
The uterine lining grows into the muscle wall. Causes severe pain and heavy bleeding, and is missed on many scans.
Endometriosis
Pain often begins days before the period. Frequently dismissed for years.
Pelvic infection
Ongoing infection causes pain that is not limited to the period.
