What usually causes this
PCOS
The most common hormonal cause. Often with weight gain, acne or excess hair growth.
Thyroid disease
Both underactive and overactive thyroid disrupt cycles, and both are easily tested.
Fibroids
More often cause heavy bleeding than irregular timing, but can do both.
Stress and weight change
Significant weight loss or gain suppresses ovulation.
Perimenopause
From the early forties, cycles naturally become less predictable.
