Irregular Periods in Lagos — Causes and What Scan You Need

A cycle between 21 and 35 days is normal. Outside that range, or wildly unpredictable, usually points to either a hormonal cause such as PCOS or thyroid disease, or a structural one such as fibroids. Both are identifiable, and both matter more if you are trying to conceive.

Seek care urgently if you have any of these

If any of the above applies, do not wait for an appointment — go to the nearest emergency department.

What usually causes this

PCOS

The most common hormonal cause. Often with weight gain, acne or excess hair growth.

Thyroid disease

Both underactive and overactive thyroid disrupt cycles, and both are easily tested.

Fibroids

More often cause heavy bleeding than irregular timing, but can do both.

Stress and weight change

Significant weight loss or gain suppresses ovulation.

Perimenopause

From the early forties, cycles naturally become less predictable.
