Heartburn and Acid Reflux in Lagos — When to Investigate

Burning behind the breastbone after meals is usually reflux. It is very common and often manageable with simple changes. What matters is recognising the small number of cases where the symptom is masking something else — particularly when it is new after 45, or comes with difficulty swallowing.

What usually causes this

Reflux disease

Stomach acid rising into the oesophagus. Worse lying flat, after large or late meals.

H. pylori infection

Frequently coexists and changes the treatment entirely.

Medication effect

Painkillers and some blood pressure drugs worsen reflux.

Hiatus hernia

Part of the stomach sits above the diaphragm, allowing acid up more easily.
