What usually causes this
Fibroadenoma
A smooth, mobile, benign lump, most common in younger women.
Breast cyst
Fluid-filled and often tender, frequently changing with the cycle.
Hormonal change
Generalised tenderness and lumpiness that varies through the month.
Infection or abscess
Painful, red and warm — most common during breastfeeding.
Cancer
Less common than the above, but the reason every new lump is assessed rather than assumed.
