Reference ranges
| AA | Normal haemoglobin — no sickle gene |
| AS | Sickle cell trait — a carrier, generally healthy |
| SS | Sickle cell disease — requires ongoing care |
| AC / SC | Less common variants; SC behaves as a milder sickling disease |
Reference ranges vary between laboratories and methods. Always read your result against the range printed on your own report.
Seek care urgently if
- Severe bone or joint pain in someone with SS or SC — a crisis needs prompt treatment
- Fever in a child with SS
- Chest pain and breathlessness with SS
- Sudden severe abdominal pain with SS
- Priapism
What a high result can mean
AS (trait)
You are healthy but carry one sickle gene. Only rarely causes symptoms — at extreme altitude or severe dehydration.
SC
A form of sickling disease, generally milder than SS but needing follow-up.
SS
Sickle cell disease, needing lifelong specialist care.
What a low result can mean
AA
No sickle gene, and no risk of passing one on.

What happens next
For couples: AA + anything is safe. AS + AS carries a 1-in-4 chance of SS with each pregnancy. AS + SS carries a 1-in-2 chance. Knowing both genotypes before marriage or pregnancy is the point of testing, and genetic counselling is available where the combination carries risk.
