AMH Result Meaning — What It Says About Egg Reserve

AMH reflects the pool of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It is useful for planning and for predicting response to fertility treatment. What it does not do is predict whether you can conceive naturally this month — plenty of women with low AMH conceive, and a normal AMH does not guarantee it.

What a high result can mean

PCOS

The commonest reason for a high AMH — many small follicles.

Ovarian tumours

Rare, and usually with other findings.

What a low result can mean

Age

The normal and expected reason — AMH declines from the mid-thirties.

Diminished ovarian reserve

Fewer eggs remaining than expected for age.

Previous ovarian surgery

Including cyst removal.

Chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Some hormonal contraceptives

Can suppress the reading modestly.

What happens next

AMH is most useful alongside a pelvic ultrasound counting antral follicles, and — if you are trying to conceive — a semen analysis for your partner. Testing only one side of a couple wastes months.
