Fasting blood sugar and lipid profile are the main ones. Fast for 8 to 12 hours — water is allowed and encouraged.

Tests that do not need fasting

Full blood count, malaria, genotype, HbA1c, thyroid function, HIV, hepatitis and most hormone tests can be taken at any time.

What breaks a fast

Tea with sugar, soft drinks, juice and food all break it. Plain water does not. Chewing gum and sweets do.

Medication during a fast

Continue prescribed medication unless told otherwise. If you take diabetes medication, ask before fasting — fasting on some medicines carries a hypoglycaemia risk.

Common questions

Can I drink water?

Yes. Staying hydrated actually makes taking the sample easier.

What if I forgot and ate?

Tell us. Some tests can still run; others are best rescheduled rather than producing a misleading result.

How early should I come?

Morning appointments suit fasting tests best — you fast overnight and eat straight after.

Is fasting safe if I am diabetic?

Ask first. We can advise on timing so your medication and the fast do not conflict.
