What SS means
You inherited a sickle gene from each parent. Red cells change shape under stress, blocking small vessels and causing pain crises and anaemia.
Reducing crises
Hydration is the single most effective daily measure. Avoiding temperature extremes, treating infections early, and taking prescribed folic acid all reduce frequency.
Infection matters more than most realise
People with SS are more vulnerable to certain infections. Vaccination and prompt treatment of fever are important, not optional.
Routine monitoring
Regular blood counts, and attention to any change in baseline, catch complications before they become emergencies.
Common questions
Is a normal life possible?
Yes. With good management many people with SS live full lives and work normally.
What causes a crisis?
Dehydration, infection, cold, stress and exertion are the common triggers.
Can it be cured?
Bone marrow transplant is curative but access is limited. Most management is preventive.
What about pregnancy?
Possible, but needs specialist antenatal care from the outset.
