Fertility tests for women

Trying for a baby and it's taking longer than you hoped? These are the tests we do at our Akoka clinic, in the order they're usually done, and what each one tells you.

When to get checked

See a doctor if you've been trying for 12 months, or 6 months if you're 35 or older. Come sooner if you have:

  • irregular, very light or absent periods
  • very painful periods or pain during sex
  • known PCOS, fibroids or endometriosis
  • a past pelvic infection (PID), ectopic pregnancy or more than one miscarriage

Start with a consultation. Our doctor will plan your tests around your cycle so you only come in when each test will give a useful answer.

Your tests, step by step

Message us when your period starts and we'll book your day 2 to 5 tests.

  1. Any day of your cycle

An AMH test (your egg reserve), thyroid tests (TSH and free T4), a prolactin test (best in the morning, rested), and STI tests, because untreated chlamydia can block the fallopian tubes.

  2. Day 2 to 5 of your period

FSH, LH and estradiol (E2) blood tests, and an antral follicle count (AFC) scan. A transvaginal scan also checks the womb and ovaries for fibroids, cysts and PCOS-type ovaries.

  3. Around the middle of your cycle

Follicular tracking: usually 3 to 5 scans over one cycle, to see whether and when you ovulate.

  4. About 7 days before your next period

A progesterone test (day 21 of a 28-day cycle) confirms that you ovulated.

Hormone test packages

If you'd rather book a bundle, our hormone test packages group the common fertility and PCOS blood tests together. Most hormone results are ready the same day.

What we don't do

Semen analysis. We don't do semen analysis. A sperm test is one of the first tests in any fertility check, so ask our doctor where your partner can have one done. We can check his hormones and do a scrotal scan: see men's health.

Tests of the fallopian tubes (HSG). These need X-ray, which we don't have. Our doctor will refer you if you need one.

Good to know

  • Blood tests are walk-in, Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Scans and consultations are by appointment.
  • No fasting is needed for fertility hormone tests.
  • Bring your period dates. If your cycle is irregular, tell us and the doctor will adjust the timing.
