Tests explained
Malaria blood film vs rapid test
Two tests can confirm malaria: a rapid test and a blood film. They work differently, and each has its place.
The difference at a glance
| Rapid test (RDT) | Blood film (microscopy) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Detects malaria proteins in a drop of blood | A trained scientist looks for the parasites under a microscope |
| Result | In about 15 to 20 minutes | Within a few hours |
| Shows the type of malaria | Partly | Yes |
| Shows how many parasites | No | Yes |
| After treatment | Can stay positive for weeks, even when you're cured | Shows whether parasites are clearing |
Test before you treat
Many fevers in Lagos aren't malaria. Taking antimalarials without a test can hide the real cause and wastes medicine. Nigeria's guidance is to confirm malaria with a test before treating.
If a fever keeps going after a negative test, see a doctor. Typhoid, urine infections and viral illnesses can all cause fever: see malaria vs typhoid.
Very high fever with confusion, fits, repeated vomiting, difficulty breathing or yellow eyes can be severe malaria. Go to the nearest hospital now. We don't handle emergencies.
