Trichomoniasis test

A swab test for trichomoniasis ("trich"), a common STI caused by a tiny parasite. Results in about an hour, with treatment by our doctors if it's positive.

Symptoms

Women

Frothy, yellow-green discharge with a fishy smell, itching or soreness, pain when passing urine or during sex.

Men

Usually no symptoms. Sometimes a discharge from the penis or burning when passing urine.

Trichomoniasis isn't included in our STI packages, so ask for it separately. If you have a discharge, a high vaginal swab can check for other causes at the same time.

How the test works

A swab is taken from the vagina (women) or the urethra (men) and examined at the clinic. The result is usually ready in about an hour.

  • Avoid sex, douching, vaginal creams and vaginal medicines for 24 to 48 hours before your test.
  • Try not to book during your period.

If your result is positive

  • It's treated with antibiotics, prescribed by our doctors at a consultation by appointment.
  • Partners should be treated at the same time, or it passes back and forth.
  • Avoid sex until you have both finished treatment.
  • Ongoing discharge? See vaginal discharge treatment.
