Lab test · Confidential · Walk-in

Chlamydia test

A rapid swab test for chlamydia, the most common bacterial STI. Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms. Walk in, results the same day, fully confidential.

Symptoms, if there are any

Women

Unusual discharge, burning when passing urine, bleeding between periods or after sex, lower tummy pain.

Men

Discharge from the penis, burning when passing urine, pain or swelling in a testicle.

No symptoms

Many people have none at all, which is why testing after unprotected sex matters.

Why it matters

Untreated chlamydia can spread to the womb and fallopian tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease), which can lead to long-term pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy and difficulty getting pregnant. In men it can cause a painful infection near the testicles. Treatment is simple once it's found.

How the test works

A swab is taken from the vagina or cervix (women) or the urethra (men) and tested at the clinic. Results are usually ready the same day.

  • Test from about 2 weeks after sex. Earlier can give a false negative.
  • Avoid douching, vaginal creams and pessaries before your test.

We test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea with rapid antigen swab tests. We don't do NAAT or PCR tests. Rapid swab tests are quick, but less sensitive than NAAT, so if your result is negative and your symptoms carry on, see the doctor.

If your result is positive

  • Our doctors treat chlamydia with antibiotics at a consultation by appointment.
  • Your partner or partners need testing and treatment too, or the infection comes back.
  • Avoid sex until you have both finished treatment.
  • Chlamydia and gonorrhoea often occur together: our Comprehensive STI package tests for both.
