What's causing the itch

Common Causes of Vaginal and Vulval Itching

🍄

Candidiasis (yeast / thrush)

The most common cause of vaginal itching. Candida overgrowth causes intense itching, thick white discharge, redness, and burning. Triggered by antibiotics, diabetes, hormonal changes, or tight clothing.

🦠

Bacterial vaginosis

BV is usually associated with discharge and odour rather than severe itching — but it can cause mild irritation and burning. Treated with metronidazole.

Trichomoniasis

A common, often under-diagnosed STI. Causes intense itching, frothy yellow-green discharge, and burning. Both partners must be treated simultaneously.

Contact dermatitis / irritation

Soaps, panty liners, spermicides, tight underwear, or scented products applied to the vulva cause allergic or irritant contact dermatitis — intense itching without discharge.

Lichen sclerosus

A skin condition causing intense vulval itching, white patchy skin, and thinning — more common after menopause but can occur at any age. Requires prescription steroid cream.

Specialist dermatology / gynaecology referral
🦟

Pubic lice or scabies

Intense itching especially at night, with visible eggs or rash at the pubic hairline. Both are treatable with topical insecticide.

Topical treatment — both partners
Important: Never douche or apply Dettol, garlic, or home remedies to the vagina. These disrupt the natural vaginal flora, worsen infections, and can cause chemical burns. The vagina is self-cleaning — it does not need washing internally.
What Lagos women need to know

Why You Shouldn't Self-Treat Vaginal Itching

The most common mistake women make with vaginal itching in Lagos is buying antifungal cream from a pharmacy without a proper diagnosis. If the cause is BV rather than candidiasis — and they can feel identical — antifungal cream will not work and may even worsen BV by further disrupting vaginal pH.

Similarly, if the itching is caused by trichomoniasis (an STI), the only effective treatment is oral metronidazole — a prescription medication. Many women cycle through over-the-counter treatments for months without relief because the correct diagnosis was never made.

The correct approach

A vaginal swab takes 2 minutes, costs very little, and tells you exactly which organism is causing your symptoms — so treatment is targeted and effective from the first visit. At Mascot Healthcare, this is exactly what we do. You leave with the right diagnosis and the right medication, not a guess.

How We Test and Treat Vaginal Itching at Mascot Healthcare

Our approach is systematic, private, and effective — same day in most cases.

  • Brief history of symptoms, duration, and any recent medication or product changes
  • Vaginal examination
  • Vaginal swab for microscopy and culture
  • pH testing (immediate) to differentiate candida from BV
  • STI screen (gonorrhoea, chlamydia, trichomonas) if indicated
  • Prescription written same visit — antifungal, antibiotic, or other as appropriate
  • Partner treatment advised where necessary
Questions

Vaginal itching FAQs

How much does treatment for vaginal itching cost in Lagos?
A confidential consultation at Mascot Healthcare costs from ₦5,000. The consultation includes examination, swab testing, and a prescription. Medication is charged separately at pharmacy prices — most treatments are affordable.
Can I have thrush and BV at the same time?
Yes — mixed infections are common, particularly in women who have had recent antibiotic use. A swab and culture identifies all organisms present so the correct combination of treatments can be prescribed.
I've had itching for months and it keeps coming back. What should I do?
Recurrent vaginal itching (more than 4 episodes per year) warrants investigation for: diabetes (which predisposes to recurrent candidiasis), an immunocompromised state, a skin condition like lichen sclerosus, or an untreated STI. Come in for a full assessment — repeated short-course antifungal treatment without a diagnosis is not the right approach.
Is vaginal itching a sign of an STI?
Sometimes — trichomoniasis and herpes can both cause intense vulval itching. If you have had a new sexual partner, unprotected sex, or your itching is accompanied by sores, blisters, or unusual discharge, an STI screen alongside the standard swab is appropriate.
