Blood pressure is measured as systolic (the pressure when the heart beats) over diastolic (the pressure between beats) in mmHg. A reading of 120/80 is read as "120 over 80."
Blood pressure varies throughout the day — it is higher after exercise, stress, caffeine, or a full bladder. A single high reading is not diagnostic of hypertension. At Mascot Healthcare, we take two readings at rest, with a 5-minute gap, in both arms on first presentation. Hypertension is confirmed by elevated readings on at least two separate occasions.
A validated home blood pressure monitor (available in Lagos pharmacies) used correctly gives more representative readings than clinic measurements. Take three readings morning and evening for 7 days — the average of all readings except day 1 is your true blood pressure. Ideal home BP: below 135/85.
By appointment at Mascot Healthcare, Akoka. BP measured both arms, twice, resting. Medication if indicated.
