A high-pitched whistling sound when breathing out, caused by narrowed airways. The most characteristic asthma symptom.

⚠️ Severe asthma attack: If breathing is very difficult at rest, you cannot speak in full sentences, your lips are turning blue, or your usual reliever inhaler is not working, go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

The two types of inhalers: why most Lagos patients use only one

Reliever inhaler (salbutamol: Ventolin, blue inhaler): Opens the airways rapidly during an attack. Many Lagos patients use this alone, which is inadequate for persistent asthma. Using a reliever inhaler more than twice a week indicates uncontrolled asthma.

Preventer inhaler (inhaled corticosteroid: beclomethasone, fluticasone): Reduces airway inflammation over time, preventing attacks. Used daily, not just when symptomatic. This is the most important medication in asthma management and is significantly underused in Lagos primary care.

A proper asthma treatment plan combines both, and includes an asthma action plan telling you when to step up treatment and when to seek emergency care.

How do I know if my child has asthma?
Childhood asthma often presents as recurrent episodes of coughing (particularly at night), wheezing, and difficulty breathing, often triggered by colds, exercise, or allergens. If your child has recurrent chest symptoms, come in for assessment. Peak flow measurement and response to a trial bronchodilator help confirm the diagnosis.
Can asthma be cured?
Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled, most people with well-managed asthma have no symptoms and live completely normal lives. The goal of treatment is zero attacks, zero hospital admissions, and no limitation of activities.
