Iron deficiency anaemia
The most common type in Lagos: caused by heavy menstrual bleeding (in women), poor dietary iron (vegetarian diet, low meat intake), or chronic blood loss. Treated with oral iron supplements.
Malaria-related anaemia
Malaria destroys red blood cells: causing anaemia particularly in children, pregnant women, and people with frequent infections. Treatment of malaria + iron supplementation.
Sickle cell anaemia
Genetic condition common in Nigeria: structurally abnormal haemoglobin causes chronic haemolytic anaemia, painful crises, and organ damage. Managed long-term with hydroxyurea and folate.
B12 / folate deficiency
Macrocytic anaemia: large, abnormal red cells: caused by poor diet, malabsorption, or chronic alcohol use. Treated with B12 injections and folic acid.
Anaemia in pregnancy
Anaemia affects over 50% of pregnant Nigerian women, a combination of increased iron demand, insufficient dietary intake, and malaria exposure. Maternal anaemia is associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, and maternal mortality. All pregnant women should have their haemoglobin checked and receive supplemental iron and folic acid.
