It's About Process, Not Bad News
The most important thing to understand: a sonographer's reluctance to discuss findings is a standard professional practice, not a signal that something is wrong. It applies to everyone, including scans that turn out perfectly normal.
The Three Main Reasons
1. A radiologist interprets the images The sonographer's job is to skilfully capture the images. A radiologist — a doctor who specialises in reading medical scans — then reviews them and produces the official report. Keeping capture and interpretation separate is a deliberate safeguard for accuracy. The sonographer offering their own interpretation would bypass this important check.
2. Findings must be interpreted in context An image on its own can be misleading. Its true meaning depends on your symptoms, medical history, medications, and other test results — the full picture your referring doctor holds. That's why results are best explained by the doctor who knows your situation, not in isolation immediately after the scan.
3. Avoiding unnecessary harm An informal, unconfirmed comment risks either frightening you about something harmless or wrongly reassuring you. Waiting for the complete, reviewed report protects you from both outcomes.

In many regions, sonographers are also professionally bound to leave diagnosis and results-giving to the reporting doctor. Even when they can see something clearly, communicating it may be outside their defined role.
