It's one of the most common sources of frustration after a scan: you've watched the sonographer study the screen for half an hour, but they won't tell you what they found. Here's why — and it's not what you might fear.
The Short Answer
In most cases, the sonographer cannot give you a full diagnosis on the spot — not because the news is bad, but because of how the reporting process works.
Why the Sonographer Stays Quiet
1. Interpretation is a separate, specialist step. The sonographer captures and records the images. A radiologist — a doctor specialised in interpreting medical imaging — then reviews everything and writes the official report. This division of roles is a deliberate quality safeguard, ensuring expert interpretation.
2. Findings need context. An ultrasound image alone rarely tells the whole story. Results must be interpreted alongside your symptoms, history, and other test results — which is your referring doctor's role. A finding that looks concerning in isolation may be completely benign in context, and vice versa.
3. Giving partial or premature information can cause unnecessary worry. An off-the-cuff comment could alarm you about something harmless, or falsely reassure you. Waiting for the full report protects you from both.
4. Scope-of-practice rules. In many places, sonographers are professionally required to leave diagnosis and communication of results to the reporting doctor.
What the Sonographer Can Do
- Share basic reassuring information where appropriate (for example, confirming a heartbeat in pregnancy).
- Explain what they're doing during the scan.
- Tell you when and how you'll get your results.
- Flag if you should see your doctor promptly, without giving a diagnosis.
Please Don't Read Into Their Silence
Sonographers concentrate hard and often go quiet while measuring — this is focus, not concern. Try not to interpret a serious expression or a silent stretch as bad news.
