After your scan, the natural next question is: when will I actually know what it found? The timing depends on where you had the scan and why. Here's what to expect.
Why Results Aren't Always Instant
Although the sonographer sees the images live, the official results usually come from a specialist doctor (a radiologist) who reviews the images afterward and writes a formal report. This two-step process is a quality safeguard — it means expert eyes interpret your scan carefully.
This is also why the sonographer often can't give you a full answer on the spot.
Typical Timeframes
- Routine scans through your doctor: The report is usually sent to your referring doctor within a few days to about a week. You'll typically discuss results at a follow-up appointment.
- Urgent scans: If your scan is marked urgent, results can be turned around much faster — sometimes the same day.
- Hospital/inpatient scans: Often reported quickly, especially if you're being treated actively.
- Pregnancy scans: Sonographers can often share key reassuring information (like the heartbeat) during the scan, with the detailed report following.
Who Gives You the Results
In most cases, your referring doctor delivers and explains the results, putting them in the context of your health, symptoms, and any other tests. This is deliberate — results are most meaningful when interpreted by someone who knows your full picture.
How to Get Them Sooner
- Ask at the time of your scan how and when results will be available.
- Book a follow-up appointment with your doctor in advance, timed for after the report should arrive.
- Ask about patient portals — some providers release reports or images online.
If You're Anxious While Waiting
Waiting for results can be stressful. If you're worried, it's reasonable to call your doctor's office to check whether the report has arrived. And remember — a quiet, uneventful scan experience often reflects a routine, reassuring result.
