Videos and 3D/4D Images
- Some clinics offer video clips or 3D/4D "portrait" images, often as part of a separate keepsake package rather than a standard medical scan.
- These bonding scans focus on lovely images rather than diagnosis and are usually optional extras.
Why the Medical Scan Comes First
During any medical scan, the sonographer's priority is completing the necessary checks and measurements. Souvenir photos are taken once the important work is done — so if the baby isn't cooperating for a nice face shot, don't be disappointed; the medical assessment always takes precedence.
Tips for a Better Scan Photo
- A well-hydrated, relaxed mum and a bit of luck with baby's position help.
- Timing matters — 3D/4D portraits often look best around 26–32 weeks, when there's enough fat under the skin but still room to move.
- The baby's cooperation is everything — sometimes they simply face the wrong way, and there's nothing anyone can do that day.
A Gentle Note on Keepsake Scans
Health authorities advise that purely non-medical "souvenir" scans be kept reasonable, since they add exposure without medical benefit. A medical scan that also produces lovely images is a wonderful bonus.
