The Sonographer — Performs the Scan In most cases, your ultrasound is carried out by a sonographer: a highly trained healthcare professional who specialises in performing ultrasound examinations. Their expertise lies in:
- Operating the ultrasound equipment skilfully
- Knowing exactly which images and measurements to capture
- Optimising image quality despite challenges like gas or positioning
- Recognising when something needs closer documentation
Sonographers undergo extensive specialist training. They are not "just technicians" — their skill directly affects how much useful information the scan provides.
The Radiologist — Interprets the Scan A radiologist is a medical doctor who has specialised in interpreting medical imaging. After your scan, the radiologist reviews the images and:
- Interprets what they show
- Writes the formal report with the findings
- Highlights anything needing attention or follow-up
This separation of capturing images from interpreting them is a deliberate quality safeguard.
Where Doctors Perform the Scan Themselves
In some settings, a doctor performs the ultrasound directly — for example:
- Sonologists or specialist doctors in certain imaging or obstetric practices
- Cardiologists performing heart ultrasounds (echocardiograms)
- Emergency and specialist physicians using bedside ultrasound during care
The exact setup depends on the clinic and the type of scan.
Then — Your Referring Doctor
Finally, your referring doctor (who ordered the scan) receives the radiologist's report and:
- Interprets it in the context of your symptoms and history
- Explains the results to you
- Decides on any next steps
