Vaginitis in Lagos: Causes, Symptoms and When It's an STI
From Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka (Yaba), Lagos
Hello Friend! Vaginal itching, an unusual discharge or an odd smell is one of the most common reasons women come to see us — and one of the most misunderstood. "Vaginitis" simply means inflammation of the vagina, and it has several causes. Knowing which one you have is the difference between quick relief and weeks of frustration.
The Three Main Types
- Bacterial vaginosis (BV) — an imbalance of the natural bacteria, often with a thin greyish discharge and a fishy odour. Not classed as an STI.
- Yeast (candida) infection — thick white discharge with intense itching. Also not an STI, and very common.
- Trichomoniasis — a frothy discharge with itching and irritation. This one is sexually transmitted and needs partner treatment too.
Symptoms to Notice
- A change in the colour, texture, amount or smell of discharge
- Itching, burning or soreness
- Discomfort during sex or when urinating
Why the Cause Matters So Much
Each type needs a different treatment. A yeast remedy won't fix bacterial vaginosis, and neither will cure trichomoniasis — which also requires your partner to be treated. This is exactly why self-treating with whatever worked for a friend so often fails. A quick examination and, where needed, a swab tells us precisely what to treat. Because the symptoms overlap with infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea, we may also suggest an STI screen to be thorough.
