Knowing exactly what to expect takes the anxiety out of any medical appointment. Here's a typical ultrasound visit from start to finish.
Step 1: Check-In
You'll confirm your details and referral. If your scan needs preparation (fasting or a full bladder), the team will confirm you're ready.
Step 2: Getting Positioned
You'll be taken to a private scan room and asked to expose only the relevant area — or change into a gown for certain scans. You'll lie on a padded examination couch; the lights are usually dimmed so the screen is easier to read.
Step 3: The Gel
Warm or cool water-based gel is applied to your skin. It ensures the probe makes perfect contact — no air gaps.
Step 4: The Scan Itself
The sonographer glides the handheld probe over the area, pausing to capture images and take measurements. You may be asked to:
- Hold your breath briefly (moves organs into view)
- Roll onto your side
- Bend or move a limb during joint scans
You'll hear clicks as images are saved. This takes 15–45 minutes depending on the scan.
Step 5: Wrapping Up
The gel is wiped away, you dress, and you're free to eat, drink, and empty your bladder. There's no recovery time.
Step 6: Results
Images are reviewed and a formal report is sent to your referring doctor — usually within hours to a few days.
