Genital Herpes: Facts, Testing and Managing Outbreaks
From Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka (Yaba), Lagos
Hello Friend! Few infections carry more unnecessary fear and stigma than genital herpes — yet it's extremely common, rarely dangerous, and very manageable. If you're worried about symptoms or a recent diagnosis, take a breath: this is something you can live with comfortably. Here are the calm, factual answers.
What Causes It?
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), of which there are two types. It spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including when no sores are visible. This is why it's so common — and why catching it says nothing about a person beyond the fact that they're human.
Symptoms to Recognise
- Small, painful blisters or sores around the genitals or anus
- Tingling, itching or burning before sores appear
- Pain when urinating
- Flu-like feelings during a first outbreak, which is often the most intense
Many people have very mild symptoms — or none — and never realise they carry the virus.
How It's Tested
If you have an active sore, the most accurate test is a swab taken directly from it. Between outbreaks, a blood antibody test can be used. Herpes testing is part of our Full Wellness STI package, and you can read about our dedicated herpes test.
Managing Herpes — It Gets Easier
There's no cure that removes the virus, but antiviral medicine controls it well. Treatment can shorten and soften outbreaks, and taken regularly it reduces how often they happen and lowers the chance of passing the virus to a partner. For most people, outbreaks become milder and less frequent over time. With a little planning, herpes need not interfere with a normal, loving relationship.
Protecting Partners
Honest conversation, condoms, antiviral medication and avoiding contact during outbreaks all reduce transmission. Our team can help you discuss this with your partner in a supportive, practical way.
