Pap Smear & Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Nigerian women — and nearly 100% preventable with regular screening. We offer both Pap smear cytology and VIA (visual inspection with acetic acid) in a private, female-friendly environment in Lagos.

Two Methods of Cervical Screening in Lagos

Pap smear and VIA are complementary methods. VIA gives an immediate result; Pap cytology provides a detailed cellular analysis. Both are available at our Lagos laboratory for Lagos women across all areas.

🔬

Pap Smear (Papanicolaou Test)

Cervical cells are collected during a speculum examination and sent to our cytology laboratory for microscopic analysis. Results are reported using the Bethesda system: NILM (normal), ASC-US, LSIL, HSIL, or frank malignancy. Results available in 3–5 days — appropriate for routine Lagos screening.

  • NILM: Normal, repeat in 3 years
  • ASC-US: Atypical, repeat in 6 months or HPV test
  • LSIL: Low-grade changes, colposcopy recommended
  • HSIL: High-grade changes, urgent colposcopy

VIA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid)

A simple, low-cost screening method that gives immediate results. Acetic acid (3–5%) is applied to the cervix — pre-cancerous areas turn white (acetowhite). The clinician can immediately identify women who need treatment. WHO recommends VIA as a primary screening method in low-resource settings across Nigeria. Same-day result for Lagos patients.

  • Immediate (same-day) result
  • No laboratory processing needed
  • VIA-positive: refer for cryotherapy or LEEP
  • Recommended every 3–5 years

Who Needs Cervical Screening in Lagos?

All Lagos women 21–65 who are sexually active need regular cervical screening. Cervical cancer has a 15–20 year progression from HPV infection to frank cancer — early detection at the pre-invasive stage (LSIL/HSIL) allows simple treatment. Most Lagos women develop cancer because they never screened, not because screening failed.

  • Age 21–65: every 3 years (Pap)
  • HIV-positive Lagos women: annually
  • Post-abnormal Pap: 6-month surveillance
  • Post-menopause: continue until 65

Every Lagos Woman Needs Cervical Screening

👩
Women 21–65 in Lagos — routine every 3 years Lagos has one of Nigeria's highest cervical cancer incidence rates. Annual Pap smear is unnecessarily frequent; every 3 years offers the same protection with far less anxiety and cost for Lagos women.
🔴
HIV-positive Lagos women — annually HIV suppresses immunity against HPV, allowing pre-cancerous changes to progress faster. HIV-positive Lagos women should screen annually rather than every 3 years.
🩸
Abnormal bleeding in Lagos women Post-coital bleeding, intermenstrual spotting, or post-menopausal bleeding in Lagos women are alarm symptoms for cervical pathology — Pap smear is one of the first investigations.
📋
Follow-up after previous abnormal Pap Lagos women with a history of ASC-US, LSIL, or treated HSIL need surveillance Pap smears at 6-month or 12-month intervals — we maintain records across visits for continuity.
🤰
Pre-pregnancy / antenatal screening Lagos pregnant women who are overdue for cervical screening can safely have a Pap smear in the first or second trimester. VIA is also safe during pregnancy when performed by a skilled clinician.
Bethesda Reporting System
NILM (Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion) Normal. Repeat in 3 years. No action needed.
ASC-US (Atypical Squamous Cells) Repeat Pap in 6 months, or HPV reflex testing. Usually regresses spontaneously.
LSIL (Low-Grade Intraepithelial Lesion) CIN 1 changes. Colposcopy recommended. Usually regresses with close surveillance.
HSIL (High-Grade Intraepithelial Lesion) CIN 2–3 changes. Urgent colposcopy + biopsy. LEEP or cryotherapy typically curative.

Simple Steps for Lagos Women

1

Not During Menstruation

Schedule your appointment when you are not menstruating — ideally 10–20 days after the start of your last period. Blood interferes with cervical cell interpretation. Lagos women who are post-menopausal may attend at any time — no timing restriction.

2

No Intercourse 48 Hours Before

Avoid vaginal intercourse, douching, and intravaginal preparations (creams, pessaries) for 48 hours before your screening. These deposit material on the cervix that can obscure cellular detail, leading to an unsatisfactory (inadequate) sample that needs to be repeated.

3

Tell Us Your History

Share your previous Pap smear history if available — particularly any prior abnormal results or treatment (LEEP, cryotherapy). Tell us about HIV status, hormonal contraception, and any new vaginal symptoms. This context enables accurate interpretation of your Lagos cervical screening result.
