Lagos's Most Common STIs, Screened Together

Nigeria has significant STI burden — particularly syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis in Lagos. Our panel screens for the most medically important infections in a single Lagos visit.

🩸

Syphilis (VDRL/RPR)

Syphilis is experiencing a resurgence across Lagos. VDRL/RPR serology detects treponemal antibodies in blood — a simple, same-day result. Positive VDRL requires confirmatory TPHA testing. Early syphilis is cured by a single penicillin injection; untreated syphilis causes cardiovascular and neurological damage years later.

  • Same-day VDRL serology
  • Positive confirmed with TPHA
  • Primary syphilis: painless genital ulcer
  • Lagos antenatal VDRL: prevent congenital syphilis
🦠

Gonorrhoea & Chlamydia

The two most common bacterial STIs — often co-infected, frequently asymptomatic. Untreated gonorrhoea and chlamydia in Lagos women cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), tubal factor infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Urethral/endocervical swab microscopy and culture, plus chlamydia antigen testing, performed at our Akoka laboratory.

  • Chlamydia: often asymptomatic in Lagos women
  • Gonorrhoea: increasingly drug-resistant
  • Both cause PID and tubal infertility
  • Treated with specific antibiotic regimens
🛡️

Hepatitis B, HIV & Herpes

HBsAg (hepatitis B — sexually transmissible and highly prevalent in Lagos), HIV rapid screen (same-day result with pre/post counselling), and HSV-1/HSV-2 type-specific IgG (herpes blood test — works without active lesions). These three complete the comprehensive Lagos sexual health screen.

  • HBsAg: Nigeria's 12–15% prevalence
  • HIV rapid: 30-minute result + counselling
  • HSV IgG: type-specific, detects latent infection
  • All handled with full Lagos confidentiality

Who Should Get an STI Panel in Lagos?

💑
New relationship or multiple partners Routine STI screening is recommended for all Lagos adults who are sexually active with new partners. An annual or per-partner screen protects you and your partners — many STIs are asymptomatic.
🏥
Genital symptoms in Lagos patients Unusual discharge, genital sores or ulcers, pelvic pain, painful urination, or testicular discomfort in Lagos patients should be investigated with a swab and serology panel without delay.
🤰
Pregnancy — antenatal STI screen in Lagos VDRL (syphilis) and HBsAg are mandatory antenatal tests in Lagos. Untreated syphilis causes congenital syphilis; HBV causes mother-to-child transmission preventable with newborn vaccination.
🔴
HIV-positive Lagos patients — annual STI screen STI co-infection is common in HIV-positive Lagos patients and accelerates immunosuppression. Annual comprehensive STI screening is part of standard HIV care.
💼
Pre-marital & pre-employment screening Lagos pre-marital panels often include VDRL and HBsAg. Some Lagos employers require a broader STI screen for food handlers and healthcare workers.
Window Periods for Lagos STI Tests
Gonorrhoea / Chlamydia Detectable within 1–2 weeks of exposure by swab/antigen test.
Syphilis (VDRL) Detectable 3–6 weeks after exposure. Repeat at 3 months if initial test negative.
HIV rapid antibody Window period 45–90 days. 4th-generation tests (Ag/Ab combo) detect from ~14–18 days.
HSV IgG (herpes blood test) Detectable from 12–16 weeks post-exposure. Equivocal results repeated at 16 weeks.

Easy to Prepare, Private and Confidential

1

No Fasting for Blood Tests

Blood-based STI tests (VDRL, HBsAg, HIV, HSV IgG) require no fasting. Walk in at any time during our Lagos laboratory operating hours — Monday to Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM. No prior appointment is needed for standard panels.

2

For Swab Tests (Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia)

For urethral swab (men): do not urinate for 1–2 hours before the swab — urination washes away organisms that would be collected. For endocervical swab (women): no specific preparation is needed. Avoid vaginal douching 24 hours before. Tell us if you are already on antibiotics.
