Hepatitis B & C Test in Lagos

Nigeria has one of the world's highest hepatitis B burden — 12–15% of Nigerians carry HBV. A simple blood test identifies infection, immunity, or the need for vaccination. Same-day results available across Lagos from our Akoka laboratory.

Three Markers, Complete Hepatitis Picture

HBV serology is not a single test — it is a panel. The combination of HBsAg, Anti-HBs, and Anti-HCV tells you whether you are infected, immune, or need vaccination.

🔴

HBsAg — Active HBV Infection

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) is the primary screening marker. A reactive result indicates active HBV infection — acute or chronic. Nigeria's 12–15% HBsAg prevalence rate is among the highest in the world. All adults in Lagos should know their HBsAg status.

  • Reactive = active infection, refer for further workup
  • Non-reactive alone ≠ immune (check Anti-HBs)
  • Chronic if HBsAg+ >6 months
  • Requires LFT + HBV DNA for staging
🛡️

Anti-HBs — Immunity

Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (Anti-HBs) indicates immunity to HBV — from either natural infection (cleared) or successful vaccination. Anti-HBs >10 mIU/mL is the accepted immunity threshold. Lagos healthcare workers should confirm their Anti-HBs titre is adequate.

  • >10 mIU/mL = immune (no vaccine needed)
  • <10 mIU/mL + HBsAg negative = susceptible, vaccinate
  • Healthcare workers need documented immunity
  • Immunity can wane — booster may be needed
🟡

Anti-HCV — Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C antibody screening detects past exposure to HCV. Unlike HBV, there is no HCV vaccine — but modern direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) cure 95%+ of cases. Reactive Anti-HCV requires confirmatory HCV RNA PCR testing, which we refer for.

  • Reactive = past or current HCV exposure
  • Confirm with HCV RNA PCR
  • 95%+ cure rate with 8–12 week DAA course
  • Shared needles, transfusions: key risk in Lagos

Who Needs Hepatitis Testing in Lagos?

🧑‍🤝‍🧑
All Lagos adults who have never been tested Given Nigeria's 12–15% HBsAg prevalence, every adult in Lagos should know their status. Most people with chronic HBV have no symptoms until liver damage is advanced.
💉
Pre-vaccination status check Before starting the HBV vaccine series, check your HBsAg and Anti-HBs. If you are already HBsAg-positive, vaccination is unnecessary and management should begin. If Anti-HBs >10, vaccination is also unnecessary.
💼
Lagos pre-employment & NYSC medicals Hepatitis B screening is a standard component of Lagos employer and NYSC pre-employment medicals. Our results are accepted on official laboratory headed paper.
🤰
Pregnancy — mother-to-child transmission HBsAg-positive mothers can transmit HBV to their newborn at delivery. Identifying status at antenatal booking allows HBV vaccination + immunoglobulin within 12 hours of birth — 90%+ prevention.
💊
Annual monitoring for known HBV carriers Chronic HBV carriers in Lagos need annual LFT, AFP (liver cancer marker), and ultrasound alongside their HBsAg monitoring to detect liver complications early.
Serology Interpretation
HBsAg+ / Anti-HBs− Active infection. Needs LFT, HBeAg, HBV DNA viral load staging.
HBsAg− / Anti-HBs >10 mIU/mL Immune — via vaccination or cleared natural infection. No further action needed.
HBsAg− / Anti-HBs <10 mIU/mL Susceptible. Start HBV vaccine series (3 doses). Recheck Anti-HBs 4–8 weeks after 3rd dose.
Anti-HCV Reactive Past HCV exposure. Confirm with HCV RNA PCR. If positive, refer for DAA therapy.

Simple, No Special Preparation

1

No Fasting Required

Hepatitis serology (HBsAg, Anti-HBs, Anti-HCV) does not require fasting. Come in at any time during our Lagos laboratory operating hours — Monday to Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM. Walk-ins are accepted without a prior appointment.

2

Know Your Vaccination History

Tell us whether you have received the HBV vaccine and, if so, how many doses. This context helps interpret Anti-HBs results — a low Anti-HBs in someone who completed 3 vaccine doses may indicate a need for a booster rather than primary vaccination.

3

Results Are Strictly Confidential

Hepatitis results are handled with the same discretion as HIV results. They are shared only with you or your designated clinician. For Lagos pre-employment purposes, results are printed on official laboratory paper; you control who receives copies.
