Cough is one of the most common reasons parents bring children to a clinic in Lagos. Most childhood coughs are viral and self-limiting — but some require prompt assessment (pneumonia, whooping cough, asthma). At Mascot Healthcare, Akoka, we assess all febrile or persistent childhood coughs carefully. From ₦5,000.
The most common cause. Cough + runny nose + mild fever. Self-limiting in 7–10 days. Saline nasal drops and paracetamol. No antibiotics needed.
High fever + fast breathing + cough — particularly after a cold that worsens. Children breathe faster when they have pneumonia — count breaths per minute. Requires antibiotic treatment.
Characteristic paroxysmal cough followed by a 'whoop' — vomiting after coughing, coughing at night. Highly contagious. Requires antibiotic treatment even in vaccinated children (vaccine doesn't prevent all cases).
Recurrent episodes of cough (particularly nocturnal), wheeze, and breathlessness — often triggered by cold air, exercise, or viral illness. Responds to salbutamol inhaler; requires preventer for frequent episodes.
Every patient who walks into Mascot Healthcare, Akoka receives a proper clinical assessment — not a guess and a prescription. We use evidence-based guidelines, up-to-date knowledge of Lagos-specific disease patterns, and appropriate investigations to ensure correct diagnosis and targeted treatment.
