For an abdominal ultrasound, the answer is usually no — you should not eat for 6–8 hours before your scan. Here's why it matters more than you might think.
What Eating Does to Your Scan
Two things happen when you eat that directly interfere with abdominal imaging:
- Your gallbladder contracts. After a meal — especially a fatty one — the gallbladder squeezes down to release bile. A contracted gallbladder is small and thick-walled, making it impossible to properly assess for gallstones, polyps, or wall disease.
- Gas increases in your stomach and intestines. Ultrasound cannot pass through gas. Bowel gas creates shadows that can completely hide the pancreas and parts of the liver and kidneys.
What's Usually Still Allowed
- Small sips of plain water (unless told otherwise)
- Essential medications with a sip of water
- Nothing else — including tea, coffee, gum, and cigarettes, all of which stimulate the gallbladder or introduce gas
Timing Your Appointment
Morning appointments make fasting easiest: sleep through most of it, skip breakfast, and scan. If your appointment is in the afternoon, a very early light breakfast may sometimes be permitted — confirm with your clinic.
What If I Accidentally Ate?
Tell the team when you arrive. Depending on what and when you ate, they may proceed (with limitations noted), or reschedule to make sure your results are reliable.
