Why It Feels Cold
Ultrasound gel is mostly water, stored at room temperature (around 20–22°C). Your skin surface sits at roughly 32–34°C. That 10-degree gap, combined with the gel's high water content conducting heat away from your skin quickly, produces the classic cold shock — the same reason a metal chair feels colder than a wooden one at identical temperature.
The Good News: Gel Warmers
Many modern clinics keep gel bottles in electric warmers set close to body temperature, turning the cold splash into a pleasantly warm one. If cold gel bothers you — or you're having an early-morning scan in cool weather — it's perfectly fine to ask whether warmed gel is available.
Why We Can't Just Skip the Gel
The gel isn't optional. Ultrasound waves cannot cross even a hair-thin layer of air; the gel fills every microscopic gap between probe and skin so sound passes cleanly into the body. No gel, no image. (Sonographers use generous amounts for exactly this reason.)
Cleanup Is Easy
The gel is water-based, non-staining, and wipes away completely with the towel provided — no residue, no laundry disasters.
Fun fact: In emergencies, sonographers have famously improvised with anything wet and air-free. But dedicated gel remains unbeaten for image quality.
