Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in Lagos: Symptoms, Testing and Treatment

From Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka (Yaba), Lagos

Hello Friend! Chlamydia and gonorrhea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections — and two of the most treatable. The catch is that they often cause no symptoms, so many people pass them on without ever knowing. Here's what to watch for, how testing works, and why both are good news once caught.

What Are They?

Both are bacterial infections spread through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. Because they're bacterial, they can be completely cured with the right antibiotics — which is exactly why finding them early is such a relief rather than a worry.

Symptoms to Watch For

When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina (gonorrhea discharge is often yellow or green)
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain in women
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles in men
  • Bleeding between periods or after sex

But remember: most people have no symptoms at all. A test is the only way to be sure.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore Them

Left untreated, these infections can climb to the reproductive organs. In women they're a leading cause of pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility; in men they can cause painful complications. Untreated infections also raise the risk of acquiring other STIs. The good news is that early treatment prevents almost all of this.

Testing and Treatment

Testing is simple — usually a swab or urine sample. Both infections are included in our Comprehensive STI package. If a test is positive, we treat with antibiotics and recommend that your partner is treated too, so you don't pass it back and forth. You can learn more about our gonorrhea test and treatment service, and about swab-test treatment in general.
