How Hepatitis B Spreads (and How It Doesn't): Myths vs. Facts
From Mascot Healthcare Clinic, Akoka (Yaba), Lagos
Hello Friend! A lot of fear around hepatitis B comes from misunderstanding how it spreads. People living with the virus are sometimes wrongly avoided, while real risks are ignored. Let's separate myth from fact.
How Hepatitis B Actually Spreads
The virus is carried in blood and certain body fluids. Real transmission routes include:
- From an infected mother to her baby at birth
- Unprotected sex with an infected partner
- Sharing razors, clippers, toothbrushes or needles
- Unsterile injections, tattoos, piercings and manicure or pedicure tools
- Needle-stick injuries among healthcare workers
How It Does NOT Spread
You cannot catch hepatitis B from:
- Hugging, shaking hands or casual contact
- Sharing food, plates or cups
- Coughing or sneezing
- Mosquito bites
So there is no reason to isolate or stigmatise someone living with hepatitis B. They need support and medical care, not avoidance.
The Best Protection
Since the virus spreads in ways that are common in everyday Lagos life — shared clippers at the barber, manicure tools, and more — vaccination is the most reliable shield. The Hepatitis B vaccine protects you regardless of exposure.
