Abortion pills (also called medical abortion) are a safe and commonly used method to terminate early pregnancies. However, like any medication, they come with side effects, some expected and temporary, others that may signal a need for medical attention.
What Are Abortion Pills?
Abortion pills typically involve two medications:
- Mifepristone, which blocks pregnancy hormones.
- Misoprostol, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
This combination is most effective within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy and is widely used around the world.
Common Side Effects of Abortion Pills
- Bleeding and Cramping
- Heavy bleeding is part of the process and can last for several hours.
- Cramping may be severe for some, similar to a heavy period or miscarriage.
- Nausea, Vomiting, and Diarrhoea
- These symptoms usually subside within a day or two after taking Misoprostol.
- Fever or Chills
- A low-grade fever is common but should not last more than 24 hours.
- Fatigue
- The body undergoes both physical and emotional stress. It's normal to feel tired or drained.
- Emotional Reactions
- Some people may feel relief; others may feel sadness, guilt, or anxiety. These emotional reactions are valid and may need attention too.
When to Seek Medical Help
Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Bleeding that soaks more than two pads per hour for two consecutive hours.
- Severe abdominal pain that doesn’t improve with medication.
- Fever over 38°C (100.4°F) lasting more than 24 hours.
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge (a sign of infection).
- No bleeding at all within 24 hours of taking Misoprostol.
