Lipid Profile Test in Lagos

A complete picture of your blood fats — six markers that determine cardiovascular risk far more accurately than total cholesterol alone. Cardiovascular disease is now the leading cause of death among Lagos adults. Know your numbers.

Six Lagos Lipid Markers Explained

Blood lipids are not all equal. LDL builds arterial plaques; HDL removes them. Triglycerides reflect diet and insulin resistance. Together they map your heart attack and stroke risk.

⚠️

LDL & Total Cholesterol

LDL-cholesterol infiltrates arterial walls and forms atherosclerotic plaques — the foundation of heart attacks and strokes that kill thousands of Lagos adults annually. Total cholesterol includes all fractions; the ratio to HDL is more predictive than total alone. Target LDL <3.0 mmol/L (lower for Lagos diabetics or cardiac patients).

  • LDL <3.0 mmol/L optimal
  • LDL >4.9 mmol/L: familial hypercholesterolaemia screening
  • Total cholesterol target <5.0 mmol/L
  • Calculated using Friedewald equation

HDL, VLDL & Triglycerides

HDL scavenges cholesterol from vessel walls — low HDL is an independent cardiac risk factor, and common in Lagos adults with high carbohydrate intake and low physical activity. Triglycerides reflect dietary fat, alcohol use, and insulin resistance — particularly elevated in Lagos patients with metabolic syndrome.

  • HDL >1.0 mmol/L (men), >1.2 mmol/L (women) optimal
  • Triglycerides <1.7 mmol/L optimal
  • High TG + low HDL = metabolic syndrome
  • Very high TG (>10 mmol/L): pancreatitis risk

Cardiac Risk Ratio (TC:HDL)

The Total Cholesterol to HDL ratio is the single most predictive number in the panel for Lagos cardiovascular risk. A ratio above 5.0 doubles cardiovascular risk; above 7.0 is very high risk. Two Lagos patients with identical LDL can have very different true risks based on their HDL — this ratio captures the difference.

  • TC:HDL <4.0 — low risk
  • TC:HDL 4.0–5.0 — borderline
  • TC:HDL >5.0 — elevated risk
  • TC:HDL >7.0 — very high risk

Who Should Test Their Lipids in Lagos?

🎂
All Lagos adults 35+ — annual routine Dyslipidaemia is completely asymptomatic until a heart attack or stroke occurs. Annual lipid profiling for all Lagos adults over 35 is the most cost-effective cardiovascular intervention.
🍬
Lagos diabetics Type 2 diabetes worsens LDL particle quality and reduces HDL — Lagos diabetics are at dramatically elevated cardiac risk and need lipid monitoring at least annually, with tighter LDL targets than the general population.
🩺
Hypertension (high blood pressure) High blood pressure combined with elevated LDL is a powerful multiplier of stroke and MI risk — particularly relevant in Lagos where hypertension prevalence exceeds 40% in adults.
👨‍👩‍👧
Family history of early heart disease Lagos patients with first-degree relatives who had a heart attack before 55 (men) or 65 (women) should have a baseline lipid profile done from age 20 — familial hypercholesterolaemia is significantly under-diagnosed in Nigeria.
🍖
Lagos dietary risk: high fat / high carbohydrate Urban Lagos diets — high in palm oil, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol — drive both LDL elevation and hypertriglyceridaemia. Even young Lagos adults often have abnormal lipid profiles without knowing.
Target Lipid Values
Total Cholesterol Optimal: <5.0 mmol/L  |  Borderline: 5.0–6.2  |  High: >6.2 mmol/L
LDL-Cholesterol Optimal: <3.0 mmol/L  |  Diabetic/cardiac: <1.8 mmol/L
HDL-Cholesterol Men >1.0 mmol/L  |  Women >1.2 mmol/L  |  >1.55 mmol/L = low cardiac risk
Triglycerides Normal: <1.7 mmol/L  |  High: >5.6 mmol/L  |  Pancreatitis risk: >10 mmol/L

Prepare for Accurate Lipid Results

1

9–12 Hour Overnight Fast

Eat a normal dinner then fast completely (water only) for 9 to 12 hours. Food — especially fatty Lagos meals — dramatically raises triglycerides. Lagos patients from Lekki, Lagos Island, or Ikeja are advised to book an early morning slot via WhatsApp to arrive before peak traffic while still fasted.

2

Avoid Alcohol & Intense Exercise

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test — even moderate alcohol transiently raises triglycerides. Avoid intense exercise 24 hours prior. Maintain your normal Lagos diet in the days before — don't diet specifically for the test, as your baseline is what matters clinically.

3

List Medications

Bring a list of all medications — especially statins, fibrates, oral contraceptives, steroids, and beta-blockers. Do not stop statins for the test — your cardiologist needs to see your lipid profile on treatment to assess whether the dose is adequate.

Enzymatic colorimetric assay — all six fractions

Calibrated enzymatic methods for every lipid marker. VLDL and LDL values align with international cardiovascular risk calculators used by Lagos cardiologists.

📋
TC:HDL cardiac risk ratio included

Every Lagos lipid report includes the cardiac risk ratio — explained in plain terms, not just flagged. You understand what your specific combination means for your heart, not just which values are outside range.

Track your Lagos lipid trends

We retain records for monitoring — essential if you have started statin therapy. Seeing your LDL trend across visits is more informative than any single value.
