Diabetes Screening Test

Nigeria has one of Africa's highest rates of undiagnosed diabetes. A simple fasting glucose and HbA1c test identifies diabetes and pre-diabetes years before complications develop — available across Lagos from our Akoka laboratory.

Three Ways to Detect Diabetes

Each glucose test captures a different time window. Together they give a complete picture of current blood sugar and 3-month control — making misdiagnosis far less likely.

🍽️

Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG)

The gold-standard initial diabetes test. Blood is drawn after an 8-hour overnight fast. Normal FPG is <5.6 mmol/L; 5.6–6.9 mmol/L indicates pre-diabetes (impaired fasting glucose); ≥7.0 mmol/L on two occasions confirms diabetes.

  • Normal: <5.6 mmol/L
  • Pre-diabetes: 5.6–6.9 mmol/L
  • Diabetes: ≥7.0 mmol/L (fasted)
  • Requires 8-hour overnight fast
📊

HbA1c (3-Month Average)

HbA1c measures the percentage of haemoglobin with attached glucose — reflecting average blood sugar over 2–3 months. It requires no fasting and is the preferred test for monitoring known diabetics. HbA1c ≥6.5% confirms diabetes; 5.7–6.4% indicates pre-diabetes.

  • Normal: <5.7%
  • Pre-diabetes: 5.7–6.4%
  • Diabetes: ≥6.5%
  • No fasting needed for HbA1c alone

Random Blood Glucose (RBS)

A blood glucose taken at any time, regardless of meals. A random glucose ≥11.1 mmol/L with classic diabetes symptoms (thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, weight loss) confirms diabetes without further testing. Useful for urgent screening.

  • No fasting required
  • ≥11.1 mmol/L + symptoms = diabetes
  • Quick screening for outpatient settings
  • Confirm with fasting glucose or HbA1c

Who Should Screen for Diabetes in Lagos?

🎂
All Lagos adults 35+ — annual routine Type 2 diabetes is often asymptomatic for years. Annual fasting glucose or HbA1c is recommended for all adults over 35 in Lagos, where dietary risk factors are high.
⚖️
Overweight or obese individuals BMI above 25 is the strongest modifiable risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Lagos's urban dietary patterns — high refined carbohydrate, low fibre — compound this risk significantly.
👨‍👩‍👧
Family history of diabetes First-degree relatives of Type 2 diabetics have 2–6× the population risk. Screening from age 25 is advised if a parent or sibling has diabetes.
🤰
Gestational diabetes (GDM) history Women who developed GDM have a 50% lifetime risk of Type 2 diabetes. Annual HbA1c after delivery is essential for this group across Lagos.
💊
On steroids or antipsychotic medications Corticosteroids and many antipsychotics cause steroid-induced diabetes. Anyone on long-term steroids in Lagos should have regular glucose monitoring.
Diagnostic Thresholds
FPG <5.6 mmol/L  |  HbA1c <5.7% Normal — rescreen in 1–3 years based on risk factors.
FPG 5.6–6.9  |  HbA1c 5.7–6.4% Pre-diabetes — lifestyle modification can prevent or delay progression to diabetes.
FPG ≥7.0 mmol/L  |  HbA1c ≥6.5% Diabetes — confirmed on two separate occasions. Referral for management initiated.
Monitoring: HbA1c every 3 months Known diabetics track control with quarterly HbA1c — target <7% on most regimens.

Prepare for Accurate Results

1

8-Hour Overnight Fast

For fasting plasma glucose: eat a normal dinner, then consume nothing except water for 8 hours before your test. Lagos patients from Lagos Island and Lekki often find early morning appointments before rush-hour traffic most convenient — book via WhatsApp to secure your slot.

2

Medications

Continue taking your usual medications unless your doctor has said otherwise. Inform us of any glucose-lowering drugs (metformin, glibenclamide, insulin) or steroids. For HbA1c only, no fasting is needed and medications need not be withheld.

3

Monitoring Diabetics

If you are a known diabetic managing your condition, HbA1c monitoring every 3 months is recommended. Bring your previous HbA1c results so we can track your trend. Random glucose is also available for between-appointment spot checks without fasting.
